Russia signs deal with China to build Power of Siberia 2 pipeline through Mongolia

The project will allow for the transit of up to 50 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas annually through Mongolian territory to China. Deliveries under the new agreement are expected to continue for 30 years.

Miller also said that Russia and China had agreed to increase annual deliveries via the existing Power of Siberia pipeline from 38 billion to 44 billion cubic meters.

He noted that Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation. According to Miller, gas prices for China will be “objectively lower” than for Europe due to the shorter transportation route.

Russia began supplying gas to China via the original Power of Siberia pipeline in 2019 under a long-term contract between Gazprom and CNPC.

Xi Jinping prepares major military display

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is scheduled to hold the largest military parade in China’s history on Sept. 3, officially to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in China at the end of World War II.

On Sept. 2, Reuters reported that Xi has shown support for nations waging aggressive war in Ukraine by inviting Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to Beijing.

A day earlier, on Sept. 1, Putin met with Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Tianjin. The Sept. 3 parade aims to emphasize China’s role as a central player in the current global order and to reshape the conventional narrative of World War II.

Reuters noted again on Sept. 2 that by hosting both Putin and Kim, Xi is underscoring China’s alignment with authoritarian states engaged in military aggression against Ukraine.
