Türkiye in talks to renew major Russian gas pact

Türkiye is discussing the extension of natural gas supply agreements with Russia past 2026 as current contracts expire at the end of 2026, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar told Bloomberg on June 1.
Turkish state energy company Botaş is conducting negotiations with Russian gas monopoly Gazprom regarding the renewal of import contracts, Bayraktar noted. He added that the potential volumes and durations of the extension have not yet been finalized.
In December 2025, Ankara extended two pipeline gas supply contracts with Gazprom via the TurkStream and Blue Stream pipelines. Türkiye stands as Gazprom's second-largest market after China, following the loss of the majority of its European clientele after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Türkiye's pipeline gas imports surged by 28% in March compared to March 2025, reaching 4.358 billion cubic meters (bcm) — the highest level recorded since late 2024. Gazprom boosted its deliveries to Türkiye via Blue Stream and TurkStream by 42.5%, totaling 2.551 bcm.
Conversely, pipeline gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Türkiye fell by 6% in March to 983 million cubic meters, while imports from Iran stood at 823.5 million cubic meters, reflecting current technical capacities.
Gazprom's total gas supplies to Türkiye in 2025 reached 21.16 bcm, remaining roughly flat compared to 2024. In December 2025, Türkiye extended two Russian gas import contracts totaling 22 bcm for one year.
Türkiye imports its Russian gas via the Blue Stream and TurkStream pipelines.
In 2024, Türkiye imported a total of 52 bcm of natural gas, with 21 bcm originating from Russia.
