Drone, EW sectors drive Ukraine’s multibillion defense tech boom

The Ukrainian defense technology market reached an estimated $6.8 billion in 2025, according to a new study by the KSE Institute, conducted in cooperation with Brave1 and Defence Builder.
The report highlights the market's rapid growth and expanding opportunities for international investors. However, the actual market size is likely higher, as a significant portion of procurement occurs outside of official statistics, through charitable funds, direct unit contracts, and in-house production by military brigades.
Among the fastest-growing segments, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) dominate, reaching about $6.3 billion in 2025. Growth has been especially strong in long-range drones and interceptor systems, while first-person view (FPV) drones remain the most widely used. Emerging opportunities include drone interceptors, mid-range strike systems, and domestically produced reconnaissance multicopters as alternatives to Chinese-made platforms.
Ground-based robotic systems are an emerging but rapidly expanding segment, valued at $252 million in 2025, with growth exceeding 600% year over year. Logistics and evacuation platforms are the primary drivers, while combat and demining systems are seen as long-term investment opportunities.
Electronic warfare (EW) systems, valued at $220 million, have also grown 3.1 times, becoming a critical component that enhances the effectiveness of other technologies. The market is shifting toward scalable production of proven platforms, with increasing emphasis on software-defined “smart” systems capable of analyzing and selectively disrupting signals.
Ukrainian defense startups and companies attracted at least $129 million in investments and grants in 2025, though the true figure may be higher due to undisclosed deals for security reasons. Investor interest is largely concentrated in artificial intelligence and software solutions.
Looking ahead, the report estimates that the defense sector could represent a $690 billion opportunity over a 10-year postwar recovery period, underscoring Ukraine’s potential role as a major defense technology hub.
