German designer pays tribute to fallen Ukrainian artist and medic
German designer Frank Wilde, known for his symbolic elevator portraits supporting Ukraine since the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, has shared a tribute to Ukrainian artist, combat medic, and volunteer soldier Margarita Polovinko, who was recently killed in action.
Wilde posted the tribute on his Instagram page on April 9, announcing Polovinko’s death and honoring her life through a series of images and words.
“Margarita Polovinko was a Ukrainian artist, a combat medic, and a volunteer,” Wilde wrote to his followers. He also shared her journey as a frontline defender.
One of the photos features a quote from Polovinko herself, describing her artwork: “I painted a girl flying like an angel above houses. A girl soaring over the ugliness of this world. My first impression of the Russians was that they were monsters who came to wage war against people.”
In his signature style, Wilde photographed himself inside an elevator, holding prints of Polovinko’s artwork—paintings she had made using her own blood. Behind him hangs a Ukrainian flag. He wears a black hoodie emblazoned with red text reading: Russia is a terrorist state.
Polovinko was killed in action on April 5 while carrying out a combat mission. News of her death was shared publicly by friends and fellow soldiers on April 8.
A farewell ceremony for the artist and combat medic will take place on Friday, April 11, in her hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
