Russia attempted to poison Ukrainian heavyweight champion boxer Volodomyr Klitschko ahead of his fight with Russia’s Alexander Povetkin in Moscow in late 2013, Russia’s Sports.ru reported, citing Russian journalist Aleksandr Belensky’s shocking claim.
Klitschko's team arrived in Russia with a kit stuffed with their own food and drinks. The Ukrainian boxer was cautious after a strange defeat in an earlier fight against American Lamon Brewster, where he was allegedly poisoned.
"In this respect, Russia is no different from any other country. There are five or six fights where, I have no doubt, poisoning took place and the fighter came out not feeling well. Later someone told me that before the fight with Povetkin there were plans to poison Klitschko," Belenky said.
Klitschko won the fight against Povetkin by a unanimous decision.
Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have signed a contract for an undisputed world heavyweight title fight in Saudi Arabia on Oct. 28.
