Ukraine’s shift to EU rules may mean no drinking water
Implementing European standards for drinking water in Ukraine would mean the country would only have technical water, said Deputy Health Minister Maryna Slobodnichenko in a Nov. 2 interview with Ukrainian News.
She explained that the issue of drinking water quality is complex, and the EU requires Ukraine to legislate these standards.
“If we set these standards the way the EU wants, it will immediately mean we don’t have drinking water across the country—only technical water,” Slobodnichenko said.
She also mentioned that if technical water is used, consumers should pay less for it, which could lead to lower water rates and reduced budget revenue.
“To align with these European standards, it’s not just about writing them down but actually implementing them nationwide,” she added. “And that’s a big question—how much time and money will it take? This is not a one-year project.”
