Svitolina and Monfils reach US Open mixed doubles semifinals

Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils have reached the US Open mixed doubles semifinals in their first official tournament as a team.
The Ukrainian-French couple married in 2021 but had never previously competed together in an official event.
Svitolina and Monfils defeated Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic and Henry Patten of Britain 5-4 (6), 4-5 (3), 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
They will face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the semifinals.
The 2026 US Open mixed doubles competition is being played under a significantly shortened format.
Matches are best-of-three sets, with each regular set played to four games. At 3-3, the set goes to a tiebreak.
There is no advantage scoring at 40-40, with a deciding point played instead.
If the teams split the first two sets, a match tiebreak to 10 points replaces the third set, with a two-point margin required to win.
Svitolina recently also took part in illuminating New York’s Empire State Building in the colors of the Ukrainian flag to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day.
