18-year-old Ukrainian basketball player Kozachenko dies in German hospital
Ukrainian basketball player Artem Kozachenko, 18, has died in a German hospital after a knife attack in Dusseldorf, Kozachenko’s team, ART Giants Dusseldorf, announced on Feb. 20.
Kozachenko and his Ukrainian teammate Volodymyr Yermakov, 17, were attacked in Dusseldorf by another group of teenagers on Feb. 12. Yermakov died at the scene from stab wounds.
After the attack, Kozachenko was placed in intensive care and underwent several surgeries. His condition deteriorated significantly over the past few days, and doctors were unable to save him, the team said.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleh Nikolenko said that German police had arrested Yermakov's killer. The suspect is identified as a 15-year-old German-Turkish high school student from Gelsenkirchen. According to media reports, the attack occurred after an argument between the children on a bus.
On Feb. 16, news outlet DW reported that three more teenagers were arrested in Germany in connection with Yermakov’s murder. The suspects are a 14-year-old German of Greek origin from Herne and two Syrians, ages 14 and 15, from Gelsenkirchen.
