AfD plans to hook Germany on Russian gas again — report

Kremlin economic adviser Kirill Dmitriev and leaders of
Germany’s far-right AfD
party have begun preparing for a meeting to discuss restarting Russian gas
supplies, Reuters reported
on Sept. 18, citing two informed sources.
The meeting could take place as early as March 2027, according to the sources. It could include Dmitriev and AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla.
“The meeting would only happen if a peace framework was agreed first between Russia and Ukraine, and the organizers hoped it would bring together the AfD, Russia, and the United States, the person said,” Reuters wrote.
“Weidel advocated the end of a boycott of Russian oil and gas to bolster Germany's flagging economy in an interview with Reuters in June.”
Organizers had hoped Witkoff and Kushner would also attend the planned meeting, where participants were expected to discuss restarting Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipelines, the source said.
However, a senior U.S. official told Reuters that Witkoff and Kushner had not been informed about preparations for the meeting and had not received invitations.
In May, the party opposed transferring a
decommissioned gas-fired power plant in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western
Pomerania to Ukraine. At the time, AfD lawmaker Leif-Erik Holm said relations
between Germany and Russia could normalize after the war in Ukraine ended and
that “Europe would buy Russian gas again.”
