Australia sends retired JDAM-ER bombs to Ukraine
Australia has delivered several Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended-Range (JDAM-ER) bombs to Ukraine, according to an Australian Defence Magazine (ADM) report from Nov. 1. These bombs were previously retired from the country’s air force.
In Australia’s defense ministry plan for guided weapons and explosive ordnance, the country officially phased out its 500-pound Mk.82 JDAM-ER munitions in 2021.
ADM confirmed that some of these bombs were transferred to Ukraine, though it remains unclear exactly when they were supplied to Ukrainian forces.
The Australian publication noted that the first recorded use of JDAM-ER bombs in Ukraine was in March 2023, though those munitions were supplied by the U.S. In April 2024, Australia confirmed it had sent unspecified air-to-ground munitions to Ukraine.
The JDAM system, manufactured by U.S.-based Boeing, consists of a kit that converts traditional “dumb” bombs into “smart” precision-guided munitions.
The kits include GPS devices that enhance targeting accuracy and can be attached to various types of weapons and aircraft, creating Joint Direct Attack Munitions. The U.S. military has used this technology for bombs weighing up to 907 kg (about 2,000 pounds), often deploying it on bombers and fighter jets.
