Belarus calls for ceasefire in Ukraine
Belarus, Moscow’s closest ally, calls for an “immediate truce” between Russia and Ukraine, and urges the belligerents to negotiate instead, Belarussian Foreign Ministry said in a Twitter post on April 12.
“Belarus stance on Ukraine is clear: it is necessary to stop the death of people, immediately declare a truce and start negotiations, and the sooner the better,” the post quotes the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik.
Aleinik adds that Belarus and Hungary are “on the side of peace,” and claims that Minsk will keep trying to de-escalate the conflict.
Since the very beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Belarus has made its territory available for Russian forces to launch continued attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The minister then repeated the claim that the United States is responsible for the war in Ukraine.
“We consider the reasons for the start of the conflict in Ukraine to be complex, but we are convinced that it was provoked & stirred up by the United States & its satellites,” the official said.
“They benefit from the situation, whilst everyone else bears the costs.”
On numerous occasions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that negotiations with Moscow will be possible once Russian troops withdraw from Ukrainian territory. Washington assesses that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin isn’t prepared to engage in substantial peace talks for now.
