Biden to meet with Zelenskyy and Erdogan in Vilnius
U.S. President Joe Biden is set to meet
with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan during the NATO
summit in Vilnius, Politico correspondent Jonathan Lemire reported via
Twitter on July 10.
Erdogan, Biden, and Zelensky have reportedly already arrived at the meeting location.
In a recent video message, Zelenskyy noted his scheduled bilateral meetings with representatives from European nations, the United States, Canada, and Japan.
“Bilateral meetings of various levels are planned in Vilnius with countries from Europe, America, Canada, Japan,” said Zelenskyy.
“The priorities are clearly defined – air defense for our cities and communities throughout the country. We are working on creating a full-fledged air shield. This, along with weapons for the front lines, will be a topic of negotiation in Vilnius… I am confident that there will be good news for our soldiers from Vilnius.”
The NATO summit will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11-12. Ukraine is hoping to receive a clear signal regarding the prospects of a future membership in the Alliance.
Although NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has confirmed such a signal will be given, no formal invitation for Kyiv to join the Alliance is expected.
However, Politico reported that Western allies have not yet unified their stance on the security guarantees Ukraine is seeking.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Western nations plan to offer Ukraine a security arrangement based on the Israeli model prior to its joining NATO. This proposal will allow for the transfer of weapons and advanced technology to Kyiv, marking a step towards its membership in the Alliance.
On July 3, Zelenskyy urged Biden to immediately extend an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO.
