Germany changes Ukrainian capital transliteration from Russian Kiew to Ukrainian Kyjiw
Germany has changed the transliteration of the Ukrainian capital from Russian Kiev to Ukrainian Kyjiw, the country’s Foreign Ministry reported on Feb. 23.
“What has long been common practice for many people will now also be changed in the ‘country directory for official use’. This means that the Ukrainian spelling of Kyiv is now used in official German,” the statement read.
The change will be implemented for official use by German authorities, companies and other structures. As part of the process, the name will gradually be changed on websites, embassy signs, and official seals.
“Kyjiw instead of Kiew. Germany now chooses the Ukrainian spelling of the Ukrainian capital and changes the name of the embassy,” Ukrainian journalist Vasyl Holod, who reports from the Ukrainian capital for German public broadcaster ARD, wrote in his X post.
Early January, German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jaeger called for the Russian transliteration of the Ukrainian capital to be abandoned in Germany.
