During a meeting with China's Special Envoy
for Eurasian Affairs Li
Hui, German officials heard no new suggestions on how to resolve the
ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, German Foreign Ministry spokesman
Sebastian Fischer said on March 11.
Fischer stated that Berlin welcomes China's "peace efforts" to resolve the war but noted that no new Chinese initiatives were presented at the meeting. As reported by Ukrinform news agency, diplomats discussed the situation in Ukraine and their efforts to achieve peace, including a "possible peace conference in Switzerland."
Fischer noted "known differences in the positions of China and the EU regarding Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine."
He also underscored that Beijing's stance on this "central issue" affects the relations between Germany, Europe, and China. Moreover, the cooperation between China and Russia, particularly regarding the supply of dual-use goods and the circumvention of sanctions by Chinese companies, is a cause for “concern.”
According to Fischer, he communicated Germany's clear position on further supporting Ukraine to the Chinese delegation.
On March 7, Li Hui arrived in Kyiv, meeting with head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak. The meeting seemingly produced no significant breakthroughs in Sino-Ukrainian relations.
