Estonia opens talks with France on joining nuclear initiative

Estonia has begun talks with France about possibly joining a French initiative to strengthen nuclear deterrence in Europe, according to Prime Minister Kristen Michal, as reported by ERR on Sept. 15.
Tallinn sees the format as a possible way to deepen defense cooperation with Paris.
France has been offering European partners broader cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence. Estonia is already covered by NATO’s nuclear umbrella, but says it is open to considering additional security mechanisms.
“We are already under NATO’s nuclear umbrella,” Michal said. “France also supports our independence with troops stationed in Estonia. So if there is an opportunity to deepen cooperation in the nuclear field, that is likely what will happen.”
The specific format of Estonia’s possible participation has not yet been determined, and talks with the French side are continuing.
The discussions come amid growing attention among European states to nuclear deterrence and defense planning.
Poland and France have already launched separate talks on cooperation in the area of a nuclear umbrella.
Lithuania is also discussing the possibility of changing constitutional restrictions on the deployment of nuclear weapons, while Finland has already amended its laws to allow the import, transit and storage of nuclear weapons within the framework of NATO defense cooperation.
