Estonian Defence Minister supports Trump's NATO spending push

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur echoed Donald Trump's
plea for increased defense spending in Europe, emphasizing the
interconnectedness of European and American security during a conversation with Ukrainian news
outlet Telegraf on March 27.
"I am 100% sure that as much as Europe needs the United States, the United States needs Europe," Pevkur noted, referencing Trump's hints at a possible U.S. pullback from NATO. "We've stood side by side in Afghanistan and Iraq, defending peace across the globe."
Pevkur concurred with the notion that European nations should allocate a minimum of 2% of their GDP to defense, a benchmark that he suggests could be increased to 2.5% or even 3%. "The core message from NATO remains: united we are stronger," he said.
The backdrop of Trump's statements includes concerns voiced in March by The Telegraph, hinting at a potential U.S. withdrawal from NATO should Trump return to office. Trump himself, on Feb. 10, stirred controversy by suggesting he would "encourage" Russia to target NATO members falling short on defense spending.
Adding to the discourse, French European Commissioner Thierry Breton recalled a 2020 warning from Trump that the U.S. might not defend Europe in the event of a military attack. Trump has also critiqued NATO as "a drain on American resources" and has had particular grievances with Germany's defense spending.
Europe fears that Donald Trump's second presidency could lead to the actual withdrawal of the United States from NATO and the destruction of the Alliance, The New York Times reported on Dec. 9, 2023.
The U.S. Congress passed a bill in December 2023 that prohibits the President from unilaterally terminating the country's participation in the Alliance.
