European Parliament calls for NATO to invite Ukraine to join alliance

Members of the European Parliament have issued a strong call to NATO countries, urging them to uphold their commitments to Ukraine and take all necessary measures to extend an invitation to the country to join the Alliance, according to a press release by the European Parliament on June 15.
The body passed a resolution to this effect with 425 votes in favor, 38 votes against, and 42 abstentions. The members expressed their hope that “the accession process will begin after the end of the war and will be completed as quickly as possible.”
Ahead of Ukraine’s attainment of full membership, it is imperative that the European Union and NATO allies closely collaborate with the country in developing temporary security frameworks that can be swiftly implemented once the Russian aggression against Ukraine comes to an end, the European Parliament stated.
The parliament emphasized that Ukraine’s integration into NATO and the EU will not only bolster regional and global security, but also strengthen the bonds between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic community.
The upcoming NATO Summit scheduled for July 11-12 in Vilnius holds significant importance for Ukraine, as it anticipates receiving a clear and resolute signal affirming the Alliance’s preparedness to welcome it as a member.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has reiterated his commitment to conveying this signal.
However, with only five weeks remaining until the summit, Western allies have yet to reach a consensus regarding the security guarantees Ukraine has requested, according to U.S. news website Politico.
According to sources cited by U.S. financial news outlet Wall Street Journal, Western nations are set to propose a security framework for Ukraine modeled after that of Israel, as a prerequisite for NATO membership. This arrangement would facilitate the transfer of weaponry and cutting-edge technologies to Kyiv, marking a significant step forward on the path to membership in the Alliance.
