Europe working to keep U.S. engaged in Ukraine defense — Pistorius
Europe is working to maintain U.S. attention and commitment
to defending Ukraine against Russian aggression, German Defense Minister Boris
Pistorius said on June 25, as quoted by The
Independent.
Pistorius emphasized the importance of the United States as
a partner and said allies are making efforts to ensure Washington does not lose
interest in the war.
“Keeping Americans interested in Ukraine is essential
because what’s at stake here is more than just a regional conflict,” Pistorius
said.
He added that European countries are continuing efforts to
prevent the United States from withdrawing its troops from EU territory.
“We’ll see if we succeed,” he said.
Earlier reports said European officials hope Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be able to persuade U.S. President Donald
Trump to authorize the sale of air defense systems during their meeting on the
sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague.
On June 10, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii
Tykhyi said U.S. military aid continues to arrive, but Ukraine is currently
working to purchase needed weapons from American partners.
On May 1, Kyiv Post reported that the Trump administration
had formally notified Congress of its intent to approve direct commercial sales
of defense equipment to Ukraine worth $50 million or more.
Zelenskyy previously stated that Ukraine is prepared to buy
a large military aid package from the United States. Trump’s administration has
publicly declared it will not provide assistance to Ukraine free of charge.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
