Finland and Sweden are urging the European
Union to ramp up sanctions against Russia following the death of Russian
opposition leader Alexei
Navalny, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said on March 26, as
reported by Reuters.
"The fact we can see that the death of Alexei Navalny is clearly linked to the leadership in Russia makes it necessary to see to it that we can add sanctions specifically targeting those who are responsible for his death," Billstrom said during a joint press conference with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
Billstrom added that sanctions against Russia should be stepped up to weaken its ability to continue its war against Ukraine.
The minister also said that both Sweden and Finland support introducing new sanctions against Belarus due to its backing of Russia in the war against Ukraine.
