Massive fire at polyester plant in Russia’s Rostov Oblast — video
At least two people were hospitalized after a large fire broke out at the Avangard polyester plant in Shakhty, Rostov Oblast, the ASTRA Telegram channel wrote on Jan. 17.
ASTRA added that locals reported hearing an explosion.
The Baza Telegram channel reported nine casualties, including three with burns, one with a concussion, and the rest with fractures and wounds.
“Emergency services are currently extinguishing the fire. All employees of the plant have been moved to a safe distance," said Yekaterina Stenyakina, a Russian State Duma deputy from Rostov Oblast.
Regional governor Vasily Golubev denied reports that the fire was caused by a drone strike, claiming that air defenses were "not working" at the time.
The Avangard plant was Russia's first polyester staple fiber plant. Opened in Jun. 2023, the plant was intended for import substitution purposes.
