Bundestag again blocks Taurus missile transfer to Ukraine proposed by opposition
The Bundestag did not support the opposition's proposal to provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles, the German Aid to Ukraine project reported on X on Feb. 22.
The proposal was rejected with only 182 votes in favor, 480 votes against, and five abstentions.
Another motion from the governing parties, which stipulates the delivery of “additional long-range weapons systems and ammunition to Ukraine”, was later approved with 382 votes for, 284 votes against, and two abstentions.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in September 2023 that Berlin had not refused to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine, but was not ready to do so at that point.
The reason for this could be the hesitation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Media suggested previously that he expressed concern that Kyiv might attack Russian territory.
Ukraine has repeatedly said that it will not use Western long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.
The Bundestag did not support a draft resolution calling for the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine on Jan. 17, with only 178 out of 666 MPs voting in favor.
Christian Freuding, head of the Special Staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, said on Feb. 5 that long-range Taurus missiles could not turn the tide of war in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
