Germany to send Ukraine air defense systems to protect grain shipments — report
Berlin is preparing to provide Ukraine with
additional anti-air
systems to help safeguard grain export infrastructure from further Russian air
strikes, Bloomberg reported on Oct. 4.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Berlin will deliver an additional IRIS-T anti-air missile system and an unspecified number of Gepard mobile air defense platforms.
These weapons are intended to protect grain shipments headed for Romania. The armaments are expected to arrive in Ukraine by end of this year.
On Sept. 28, The New York Times reported that successful attacks on Russian ships in the Black Sea are resulting in Ukraine increasingly reclaiming safety of navigation for cargo ships in the region, despite Russia’s attempts at blockading Ukrainian Black Sea ports.
