Germany unveils first national security strategy, calling Russia “the biggest threat to peace”

The German government has unveiled the country’s first national security strategy on June 14, in which it calls Russia “the biggest threat to peace,” as reported by the German news website Der Spiegel.
The concept envisages strengthening security in three main areas:
• defense capability: the goal is to spend 2% of GDP on defense;
• viability: quick actions should help avoid crises or mitigate their consequences — it concerns climate, ecosystems, and food security;
• stability: the free democratic order should be better protected from illegitimate influence from outside; dependence, in particular, in the supply of raw materials, must be reduced.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pointed out that since his government had agreed to build a strategy, Europe’s security architecture had changed radically, according to the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
He cited the invasion of Ukraine, the ongoing war, and the destruction of critical infrastructure such as the Nord Stream pipelines as providing a new impetus for pushing ahead with the plan.
The strategy stipulates that China is a “partner, systemic rival and competitor,” while Russia is called “the biggest threat to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region in the foreseeable future.”
“Our security policy’s main task is to ensure that we can continue to live in peace and freedom in our country,” reads the report.
“To this end, we’re steadfastly committed to NATO and the European Union and are strengthening the Bundeswehr to fulfill its main mission — defense of the country and the Alliance.”
