‘Good meeting’ with Trump, Zelenskyy says after NATO summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked U.S. President Donald Trump to sell Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine and congratulated the United States on its operation against Iran’s nuclear program, Zelenskyy said on June 25.
The Ukrainian president described the 45-minute-long conversation on the sidelines of NATO summit in The Hague in a Telegram post.
“Good meeting with the U.S. president in The Hague…,” said Zelenskyy.
“We discussed protecting our people—first and foremost, purchasing American air defense systems to cover our cities, our people, churches, and infrastructure. Ukraine is ready to buy this equipment and support American arms manufacturers. Europe can help, too.”
He also praised the United States bombing Iranian nuclear facilities last weekend.
“I congratulated President Trump on his successful operation in the Middle East,” the Ukrainian leader added.
“It is important that U.S. actions have weakened not only their nuclear program but also their drone production. We will watch the situation closely.”
Zelenskyy said he briefed Trump on recent meetings between Ukrainian and Russian officials in Istanbul.
“I told him about the technical team meetings in Istanbul and the prisoner exchanges, including repatriating bodies of fallen soldiers…,” he stated.
“We discussed the situation on the battlefield. [Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin is definitely not winning. I shared with him the facts about what is really happening on the ground.”
Trump, in turn, described his meeting with Zelenskyy as “very pleasant” despite admitting that they had “a few rough patches” in the past.
“I wanted to see how he was doing,” Trump told reporters.
“I think he would like to see this [the Russo–Ukrainian war] end. And I do too. I think… I left the meeting with the understanding that he wanted it to end. I believe this is a great time to finish it. I’m going to talk to Vladimir Putin and see whether we can end the war.”
At the same time, he said that no new concrete ceasefire proposals were discussed.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
