UN report: 146 civilians killed in Ukraine in June, highest child casualties in 2024

“At least 146 civilians were killed and 672 injured in Ukraine in June,” including 8 children killed and 57 injured, marking the highest number in 2024, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) wrote in its “Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict” report released on July 8.
“While lower than May, the overall casualty number is the second highest in 2024. Seventy-two percent of civilian casualties in June occurred as a result of artillery shelling, multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), and aerial bombardments, while 26% were caused by missile and loitering munitions strikes,” the report said, noting that the majority of civilian casualties occurred in Donetsk (34%) and Kharkiv (22%) oblasts.
According to the HRMMU, Russia carried out a total of 33 attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in June, including "23 attacks in government-controlled territory and 10 in territory occupied by the Russian Federation."
The United Nations reported in April that about 10,810 civilians had been killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, the actual number of civilian casualties in Ukraine is much higher, as many cases are still unconfirmed. In particular, in Mariupol, according to rough estimates by the Ukrainian authorities, at least 22,000 people died in the first three months of the full-scale war.
