Intensity of shelling by Russian military up significantly in March, border guards say
The intensity of shelling of the Ukrainian military by Russian invasion forces in March increased significantly compared to the previous month, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Andriy Demchenko told news agency Ukrinform on April 6.
"During March, the border guards withstood more than 1,800 attacks by the enemy on the positions of our soldiers," Demchenko said.
“Their intensity increased by 11% compared to the previous month. Together with other units, the border guards participated in more than 900 combat engagements with the aggressor in March.”
Demchenko added that a significant amount of enemy manpower and equipment was destroyed during joint operations.
Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian occupation forces are focusing their main efforts on conducting offensive operations on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiyivka and Maryinka axes. Bakhmut, Avdiyivka, and Maryinka remain at the epicenter of the fighting.
Western officials said on April 5 that Russian forces have made "very slow progress" in Bakhmut over the past six months, despite the deployment of large numbers of soldiers and heavy casualties.
Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesman for the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said that Russian occupation forces are "very far" from capturing Bakhmut, despite the claim by Russian Wagner mercenary company leader Yevgeny Prigozhin that they have already done so.
