Israeli police officers have arrived in Uman, Cherkasy Oblast, to help maintain public order during the annual Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage, regional police said on Sept. 6.
The Israeli officers will work alongside Ukrainian law enforcement in areas where Breslov Hasidic pilgrims are staying and gathering during celebrations of the Jewish New Year.
They will remain in Uman until the end of Rosh Hashanah.
Israeli police are currently conducting joint patrols with Ukrainian officers, State Emergency Service rescuers and National Guard personnel. They are also providing safety guidance to pilgrims.
The situation in Uman remains stable and under control, police said.
U.S., Ukraine warned pilgrims against travel
The U.S. State Department previously urged American citizens not to travel to Uman for the annual pilgrimage to the grave of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov because of the risk of Russian attacks and insufficient shelter capacity for all pilgrims.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also advised Israeli Hasidic pilgrims in July not to travel to Uman for Rosh Hashanah celebrations.
Every year, tens of thousands of Breslov Hasidim travel to Uman to visit the grave of Rebbe Nachman, the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement.
Pilgrims have continued traveling to Ukraine despite wartime security risks.
A Russian missile strike on an apartment building in Uman in 2023 killed 23 people, including six children.
Despite the attack, around 35,000 Hasidic pilgrims visited Uman for Rosh Hashanah later that year.
More than 30,000 pilgrims arrived in 2024, although some were unable to travel because of Iran’s aerial attack on Israel in early October.
More than 35,000 Hasidic pilgrims returned to Uman for Rosh Hashanah in 2025.
