Kyiv to establish shelters with automated opening system, allocates $20 million to refurbish shelters
The Kyiv City Administration announced plans to equip approximately 3,000 shelters and storage facilities in the capital with an automated opening system, aiming to ensure guaranteed access to protective structures during air alerts, according to an official statement on June 9.
“These coded systems have already undergone testing in the Darnytskyi district, and we will implement them throughout the entire city. With this system, we can equip around 3,000 shelters and storage facilities,” said Petro Panteleiev, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Authorities are set to acquire and install around 200 modular precast concrete shelters that can be rapidly deployed. This strategic deployment will reduce the distance between residential buildings and prepared protective structures in specific areas of the city.
“We will also conduct an unplanned inventory of existing basements and ground floor premises to supplement the inventory of protective structures, where technically feasible. The use of ballistic weapons by the enemy compels us to create additional shelters that are readily accessible to people, primarily in residential areas of the city,” explained Panteleiev.
To support these initiatives, the city council deputies passed a resolution on June 8, allocating an additional 750 million hryvnias ($20 million) this year for the repair and establishment of shelters.
Russia launched a massive missile attack on the capital on June 1, including the use of Iskander missiles.
Tragically, due to the shelling in the Desnianskyi district, two adults and one child lost their lives as they were unable to reach the shelter as the premises were locked.
