Latvia plans to mine its border with Russia and Belarus
Latvia is set to bolster its borders with Belarus and Russia, including laying minefields along the border, to block potential enemy troop infiltrations, Latvian news outlet Delfi reported on Feb. 29.
This enhancement will include the use of existing infrastructure alongside heightened border protection measures, according to Border Guards Commander Kaspars Pudans.
The primary aim is to obstruct paths that could allow enemy forces to penetrate, including abandoned roads, bridges, and railway tracks. The strategy involves reducing the number of potential corridors along the border that could facilitate an assault.
The approach includes the deployment of explosive and non-explosive barriers, reconnaissance operations, fire application measures, and potential deception tactics.
The strategy involves establishing minefields along the border, focusing particularly on anti-tank mines to prevent the incursion of enemy military vehicles into Latvian territory, Pudans said.
These mines would be remotely activated. However, the specifics of how these obstacles will be constructed remain undisclosed.
