Lithuania observes minute of silence during Independence Day celebrations to mark Navalny death

A minute of silence was observed in Lithuania during the celebration of Independence Day in connection with the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Telegram channel Volna.Lithuania reported on Feb. 16.
The minute of silence was declared by Lithuanian politician and First Chairman of the Seimas, Vytautas Landsbergis.
A spontaneous memorial rally will be held in the park near the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in Vilnius, where people were called to bring flowers and candles to the monument to the victims of political repression.
Russian authorities announced the death of 47-year-old opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Feb. 16. The politician spent the last three years in prison. He was arrested immediately after returning to Russia from Germany in January 2021. Since the end of 2023, he had been serving his sentence in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Russian Far North.
Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh nonetheless said that his team currently has no confirmation of the oppositionist's death.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin, said he was not aware of the circumstances of Navalny's death, but added that Putin had already been informed.
