NATO to increase surveillance in the Black Sea – Stoltenberg

Following a meeting of the
newly-established Ukraine-NATO Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg
has announced that the Alliance plans to strengthen security in the Black
Sea after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI).
“Important meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council; we condemn Russia's withdrawal from the grain deal, its cynical weaponization of hunger, and its dangerous actions in the Black Sea,”
“NATO is united — Allies continue to step up for Ukraine, and increase vigilance in the region.”
According to a press release NATO issued after the council met, the “increased vigilance” Stoltenberg referred to will mostly consist of ramped up reconnaissance in the region, using naval aviation and UAVs.
On July 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the Ukraine-NATO council to meet and discuss steps in response to Moscow abandoning the grain deal.
