No court appeal over Zelenskyy’s legitimacy, MP says
Ukraine’s ruling Servant of the People
party will not petition the Constitutional Court on the question of legitimacy
of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's presidency, party MP Fedir Venislavsky told RFE/RL on
Feb. 28.
Previously, Ukrainian newspaper ZN.UA reported that the President's Office had drafted an appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding Zelenskyy's presidency. Regular presidential elections were scheduled for March 31, 2024, as Zelenskyy's five-year term expires on May 20, 2024, according to the constitution. However, martial law prohibits holding any elections.
Venislavsky noted that Article 108 of Ukraine's Constitution clearly states that "the president continues in office until the new president assumes power."
“This is an unequivocally binding mandate, which the president must adhere to,” he said.
According to Venislavsky, all parliamentary factions have agreed that elections cannot take place during martial law, in line with international practice.
“… the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, for example, noted that elections cannot be held during martial law,” he adds.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
