One police officer killed, another injured in landmine blast in Chernihiv Oblast
One police officer has been killed and another injured in a landmine blast in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv Oblast, the regional police reported on Facebook on June 9.
The officers were off duty. They were driving their own car through the border zone when they came across a landmine, the agency said.
39-year-old Oleksiy Zhovtyk, a senior sergeant of Police Separtment No. 2 (the village of Ripky) of the Chernihiv District Police Office died on the spot. The police officer has three young children.
His colleague was injured and hospitalized, the regional police added.
No less than a decade is needed to clear Ukraine from mines, say Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Emergency Service.
About 30% of Ukraine — about twice the size of Austria — is mined due to Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The complete humanitarian demining of Ukraine will cost $37.4 billion, according to the World Bank. Prioritized demining of farmland alone costs $1.5 billion.
