The United States could become a refuge for Hungarian Prime
Minister Viktor Orbán if the situation in the country becomes too tense,
Hungarian investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi wrote on Facebook
on April 25, commenting on Orbán’s announcement that he would give up his
mandate in the new parliament.
“Viktor Orbán announced today that he will not take his seat
in parliament, will not take up his mandate and therefore will not have
immunity,” Panyi said.
Orbán also said the Fidesz party’s leadership vote would be
postponed until June, Panyi added.
“All of this matches information I received on Tuesday that
Orbán is planning a trip to the United States this summer, and that the United
States could become his refuge if the situation in Hungary becomes too tense,”
the journalist wrote.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is leaving office
after losing the election, said on April 25 that he would give up his
parliamentary mandate but was ready to continue leading Fidesz if the party
congress approved it.
Orbán has led Fidesz for more than three decades, since
1993, and served 16 years as Hungary’s prime minister, from 2010 to 2026.
Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 12. The Tisza
party, led by Péter Magyar, won the vote.
Magyar will be sworn in as prime minister on May 9. He has
already said one of his first steps as head of government will be to suspend
the work of state media.
