Orban reiterates opposition to Ukraine’s EU, NATO accession at Hague summit
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reiterated his opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and NATO during a press conference at the NATO summit in The Hague on June 25, vowing to obstruct both processes.
“NATO has no business with Ukraine. Ukraine is not a NATO member, nor is Russia. My task is to ensure it stays that way,” Orban said, when asked about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s participation in the summit.
Orban argued that Ukraine’s EU membership risks escalating the war for the entire union and claimed Russia poses no real threat to NATO.
He previously noted that the United States, Turkiye, Slovakia, and Hungary opposed Zelenskyy’s full participation in the summit, held on June 24-25.
The Hungarian leader emphasized his stance against Ukraine’s integration into NATO or the EU in any form, citing incompatibility with Hungary’s national interests.
The NATO summit, the first led by new Secretary General Mark Rutte, former Dutch prime minister, primarily focused on Middle East developments, with the Russia-Ukraine war likely taking a secondary role, Western media reported.
