Hungarian PM Orbán to meet Macron before leading EU Council
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron for a working lunch at the Elysee Palace on June 26, Europe 1 radio reported on June 25.
The meeting comes ahead of the re-election of the EU presidency on June 27.
From July 1, Hungary will lead the European Council under the slogan "Make Europe Great Again." Orbán's visit is aimed at outlining Budapest's broad plans for its six-month term.
"It will be an opportunity to prepare for the European Council and Hungary's upcoming rotating presidency of the EU," Macron's team said.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of topics, including support for Ukraine and the European defense industry.
Earlier, Orbán criticized talks on Ukraine's EU membership but said he would not block the process, calling the negotiations a "purely politically motivated process."
"Hungary does not agree with this accession process, but we do not block it and support the start of negotiations," he said.
"This is not a question of 'yes' or 'no' to EU membership, but we must first examine what the consequences would be if we accepted a country at war whose borders are not defined in practice."
