Over 350 strike drones flew toward Moscow and Moscow Oblast overnight on the first day of Duma voting, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed on Sept. 18.
According to Sobyanin, the massive aerial movement heading toward the capital was recorded between 8 p.m. on Sept.
The Moscow mayor asserted that Russian air defense units intercepted and destroyed 64 drones directly on their final approach to Moscow, claiming the remainder were neutralized "at distant interception perimeters".
Throughout the night, Sobyanin issued several updates regarding falling wreckage from intercepted drones.
The aerial alert severely disrupted civil aviation hubs servicing the Russian capital. Both Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports suspended flight operations starting Sept. 17 evening, with civil aviation flight restrictions lifted only around 7 a.m. on Sept. 18.
A simultaneous overnight drone attack struck Rostov Oblast. Regional Governor Yuriy Slyusar claimed that local air defense batteries intercepted over 50 UAVs across the oblast, with social media channels sharing footage of intense air defense artillery engagements and detonations.
The drone strikes coincided with the start of three-day voting for the Russian State Duma from Sept.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the voting process: "This is a farce staged by the occupying power that has nothing in common with democratic elections and establishes no legal grounds for extending Russian jurisdiction over any part of Ukraine's sovereign territory."
