Parliament expects to vote on demobilization bill in eight months — Defense Ministry
Ukraine’s parliamentary Defense Committee
has instructed the Defense Ministry to draft a comprehensive bill on demobilization
of military personnel within the next eight months, ministerial spokesperson
Dmytro Lazutkin told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on April 10.
According to Lazutkin, neither the parliament nor the country's leadership can afford to make “hasty decisions” on this matter at the moment.
“The General Staff, which understands the operational situation and the threats and risks that the state faces, has expressed their concerns [with demobilization of troops],” said Lazutkin.
“We cannot make hasty decisions right now.”
He noted that Russian troops continue to advance along the entire front line, and weakening Ukraine’s Defense Forces is not an option right now.
Lazutkin added that the work on the new bill will be carried out in coordination between the Defense Ministry and General Staff.
“The General Staff clearly has a complete understanding of the current situation and its prospects; we have to consider all scenarios, including the less optimistic ones,” he said.
“Every aspect is being considered to prevent any [enemy] breakthroughs or weakening of Ukraine's defense.”
On April 9, the Defense Committee, following a request by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, removed the demobilization clause from the mobilization reform bill that has been debated in the parliament since January. The bill is expected to be put to a final vote on April 11.
