Magyar to be sworn in as Hungary’s prime minister on May 9

Péter Magyar, leader of Hungary’s Tisza party, which won the
parliamentary elections, will be sworn in as prime minister on May 9.
“On the afternoon of May 9, after the prime minister’s
official swearing-in ceremony, we will hold a celebratory event in Kossuth
Square near Parliament in Budapest to mark the political transition,” he said on
social media on April 22.
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok said
he had called the inaugural session of the new parliament for 10 a.m. on May 9.
Parliamentary elections were held in Hungary on April 12.
The final results gave Péter Magyar’s opposition Tisza party 141 seats in
parliament, enough for a majority. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s
Fidesz party won 52 seats, while Our Homeland took six.
On April 15, Magyar said Hungary’s president would ask him
at parliament’s inaugural session to form the next government, which could be
sworn in by mid-May or slightly earlier.
He said one of his first steps as prime minister would be to
suspend state media operations.
Magyar also said he expected Orbán to lift his veto on an EU
loan of EUR 90 billion for Ukraine after oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline
resumed.
