Poland plans electronic security system along 112 km of Ukraine border

Poland plans to equip more than 100 kilometers of its border
with Ukraine with a new electronic security system featuring monitoring
equipment and motion sensors to supplement existing physical barriers.

Radio reported the plans, citing Polish Border Guard Brig. Gen. Wioleta
Gorzkowska.
Gorzkowska said the electronic security system would be
installed along two sections of the border. The first project will cover 69
kilometers in the area overseen by the Nadbużański Border Guard Unit, while the
second will cover another 43 kilometers of land border in the Bieszczady Border
Guard Unit’s area.
The new systems are expected to cover about 112 kilometers
in total.
At the same time, Poland plans to upgrade defenses along its
borders with Russia and Belarus. The plans include observation towers equipped
with electro-optical systems and drone-detection systems along the Belarusian
border.
The European Union is funding the projects.
Gorzkowska also said the Border Guard was unable to make
planned purchases worth 3 billion zlotys because Polish President Karol
Nawrocki vetoed a law on the use of SAFE program funds. The planned purchases
included armored vehicles and machine guns.
Poland has also tightened security at border crossings with
Ukraine. Warsaw is taking additional security measures amid Russian strikes on
western Ukrainian oblasts and other threats related to Russia’s war against
Ukraine.
