Ukrainian membership in the EU will be a
priority for Poland during its presidency of the European
Council, Polish President Andrzej Duda said on May 1, as reported by Polish
new outlet RMF24.
Poland will preside over the council in the first half of 2025. In addition to Ukraine’s and Moldova’s EU accession, Warsaw will focus on strengthening Euro-Atlantic ties and cooperation with the United States during its tenure, according to the president.
"I and the (Polish) Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki) know well what it means to wait for a long time, what it means to want to be part of a free West," Duda said.
He emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova's accession into the EU is a momentous modern-day challenge for the bloc.
On April 3, media reported that the European Commission will recommend starting negotiations regarding Ukraine's membership in the EU as early as October.
