Poland to halt aid to Ukrainian refugees in 2024
The flow of refugees from
Ukraine to Poland has slowed down to a trickle, and emergency social
programs for their support will expire in 2024, Polish government secretary
Piotr Müller told news agency PAP on Oct. 4.
In the interview, Müller stressed that Ukrainian refugees in Poland will lose part of their social benefits in the country by 2024. The government does not intend to renew at least some of the welfare programs for Ukrainian citizens, and this issue has already been definitively agreed upon.
Responding to a journalist's question about when exactly the payments will be cancelled, Müller said: "Probably in the first quarter of 2024." In his opinion, there is no sense in continuing to pay aid to Ukrainians.
"The term of decisions on providing assistance is gradually coming to an end; this is stated in the law and the payments will not continue," he explained.
Meanwhile, media reports from March 2023 said that Ukrainian refugees in Poland had received about PLN 2 million (approximately $450,000) in excess aid: some Ukrainians reportedly continued to receive aid even after returning to Ukraine.
