Russia has lost 90% of its initial invasion force in Ukraine — report
Over the course of the war in Ukraine, Russia’s
military
casualties have amounted to 315,000 troops, accounting for 90% of the
forces with which Moscow invaded in February 2022, Reuters reported on Dec. 12,
citing a source familiar with U.S. intelligence reports.
According to the source, Russia's losses in personnel and military equipment have "have set back Russia’s military modernization by 18 years."
Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine with 360,000 soldiers. Since then, about 87% of that force, or 315,000 Russian troops, have been killed or wounded. The agency notes that the losses have led Russia to "loosen recruitment standards and draft convicts and older civilians to deploy in Ukraine."
The journalists reached out to the Russian embassy for comment but did not receive a response.
