Russia’s war against Ukraine will keep destroying Ukraine’s
cultural, historical, and religious heritage as long as it goes on, the UK
Defense Ministry reported on
X on May 15.
Russia’s bombardments of Ukrainian cities through long-range
aviation strikes, and glide munitions have a devastating impact.
“Ukraine’s Culture and Information Policy Ministry stated
that as of May 2, 2024, a total of 1,987 cultural institutions have suffered
losses and damage since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion,” the
statement said.
A total of 1,062 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed
or damaged as of May 5, the Ministry said. UNESCO has separately confirmed
damage to 129 religious sites as of April 10.
In mid-February, UNESCO estimated Russia caused $3.5 billion in damage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage, with restoration expected to take 10 years and require $9 billion to rebuild.
