Russia officially confirms death of VDK Novocherkassk sailor in Feodosia, but then deletes report

For the first time, Russian authorities publicly confirmed the death of a sailor from the VDK Novocherkask, a vessel destroyed in the port of temporarily occupied Feodosia on Dec. 26, with this acknowledgment later being removed, Ukrainian news outlet Krym.Realii reported on Jan. 30.
This revelation surfaced through a post on Jan. 29 by the A.S. Pushkin Gymnasium in Shakhty, Rostov Oblast.
The educational institution’s post states that the deceased sailor was named Igor Meshcheryakov. He graduated from the gymnasium in 2017.
According to the post, Meshcheryakov “served in the 197th brigade of large landing ships of the Russian Navy VDK Novocherkask” as a sailor.
According to Krym.Realii, the educational institution also reported that the sailor died on Dec. 26, 2023, the day of the missile strike on Feodosia. Additionally, Meshcheryakov was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage.
As of Jan. 30, the Shakhty Gymnasium has already hidden this post on the educational institution’s portal and deleted it from the Ukraine-banned Russian social network VK.
Sinking the Novocherkassk
Feodosia residents reported loud explosions over the city on the night of Dec. 26, with indications that the air defense system was operational, according to the pro-Russian Shot Telegram channel.
Later, Ukrainian Air Force Commander General Mykola Oleshchuk, reported a strike on the large Russians landing ship, Novocherkassk, thanking his pilots.
The Ukrainian Air Force later stated that the attack was carried out by cruise missiles.
The Ukrainian Navy reported that at the time of the missile attack on the Novocherkassk landing ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, there could have been approximately 80 people on board.
