Russia wants to use Belarusian prisoners as builders in occupied Mariupol, mayor advisor says
Belarusians incarcerated for minor crimes are to be taken to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Mariupol to do building work, Mariupol mayoral advisor Petro Andriushchenko said on Radio Svoboda on April 11.
"Just yesterday we received information that not only Russians will be involved in construction (works in Mariupol). They are going to bring Belarusians incarcerated for minor crimes in order to involve them in the rebuilding of Mariupol," Andriushchenko said.
Russian construction workers, who are now coming to Mariupol in great numbers, plan to stay in the city.
"They aren't planning to leave for anywhere, they are planning to build residential buildings and neighbourhoods for themselves to stay there within the 2% mortgage program Russia launched this February," he said.
Forty tenders have been already awarded in Moscow to companies close to the Kremlin regime.
"They will build everything with the state's money. So, more of them are coming soon," the mayoral advisor said.
