Avdiivka Coke Plant under threat from Russian offensive, no end of attack in sight

Russian forces are intensifying their offensive on the frontline city of Avdiivka, attempting to encircle the city and subjecting it to heavy bombardment, Vitaliy Barabash, the head of Avdiivka’s city military administration said on national television on Nov. 3.
The city, which lies barely 7 kilometers to the north the regional center Donetsk, which has been under Russian occupation since 2014, has come under relentless attack by Russian forces for more than a month, with no sign of the Russian attack ending.
“Infantry is advancing on the city, both from the south and the north, without yet employing their heavy equipment. (The Russians) are making concerted efforts to encircle the city,” Barabash said.
He also said that a third wave of the Russian offensive was expected to commence once the ground conditions permit. He said that the Avdiivka Coke Plant had become a new target for the Russian forces.
Overnight, the city experienced some relative calm, with sporadic shelling occurring in the old and central parts of the city. However, in the morning, a significant shelling incident took place in the old part of Avdiivka, resulting in the hospitalization of two civilians.
Russia’s offensive on Avdiivka – What is known
Russian troops intensified their offensive on Avdiivka on Oct. 10, launching massive attacks on the Donbas town.
The head of Avdiiivka’s military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, said that Oct. 10 saw “probably the largest attack on the city in the entire full-scale war,” but the situation was under control. The Ukrainian Armed Forces said that the Russian military wants to surround Avdiivka, and is throwing a large amount of equipment and personnel into battle.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukrainian troops are holding their positions near Avdiivka.
On Oct. 20, the head of Avdiivka’s military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, said that Russian troops had launched a new wave of assaults. The situation remains complicated.
Since the beginning of the Russian offensive on Avdiivka, the losses of the occupation forces in Donetsk Oblast amounted to 6,500 soldiers, the spokesman of the joint press center of the Tavria Defense Forces, Colonel Oleksandr Shtupun, has said.
