SBU probes video of allegedly beheaded Ukrainian soldier posted by Russians
Ukraine’s SBU Security Service has launched an investigation after a video of the beheading of a Ukrainian defender was posted on social media, the Prosecutor General's Office reported on Telegram on Aug. 17.
The video shows the Russian military demonstrating the head of an alleged Ukrainian soldier on a stake. They claim to have killed him on Russian soil.
"The dissemination of such a video by representatives of the Russian Federation once again confirms their complete disregard for the norms and principles of international humanitarian law," the statement reads.
Law enforcement officers have launched an investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), and urgent investigative actions are underway to verify the information. The perpetrators face life imprisonment.
DeepState monitoring group analysts wrote on Aug. 16 that the Russian troops recorded a video with the severed head of an alleged Ukrainian soldier at the Kolotilovka checkpoint in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast. The footage is allegedly of the 155th Brigade of the Russian Federation.
Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reacted to the video and said he had appealed to the UN and the ICRC.
