‘Routine household fire’ engulfs military unit in Simferopol
A military unit on Kalinina Street in Simferopol, in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory of Crimea, was engulfed in flames on Sept. 9, a video posted by the Telegram channel Krymskiy Veter shows.
“It is said that the fire started after ‘cotton’
was involved,” the Krymskiy Veter report said.
Explosions in Russia or Russian-held
territory far behind the frontlines are popularly referred to in Ukraine as “bavovna”
(“cotton” in English), as the Russian word for a small explosion resembles the
Ukrainian word for cotton.
Ukraine’s Crimea has frequently been hit by
explosions since the summer of 2022. They have often occurred at airbases, rail
hubs, harbors, and other bases of Russia’s military occupation forces. And on
Aug. 24, Ukrainian Independence day, Ukraine carried out its first reported
commando raid on the peninsula since Russia began its military occupation of
the Ukrainian territory in 2014.
Oleg Kryuchkov, an advisor to the
Russian-appointed “governor” of Crimea, labeled the fire in Simferopol as a “routine
household fire.”
On Aug. 2, an explosion was heard in the
village of Hvardiiske in the Simferopol District, where one of the Russian
invaders’ airbases is located.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
