NATO rejects Poland's plan to intercept Russian missiles over Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated in a July 14 interview on Ukrainian national television that NATO opposes the proposal for Poland to use its air defense systems to intercept Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory.
When asked about Polish air defense shooting down missiles aimed at Poland while still over Ukraine, Stoltenberg responded, "NATO will continue to support Ukraine, and we have already strengthened our support. But NATO's policy remains unchanged - we will not participate in this conflict. We will not become part of the conflict. So we are helping Ukraine to destroy Russian planes, but NATO will not be directly involved."
Stoltenberg reaffirmed that "Ukraine has the right to attack legitimate military targets on Russian territory." He acknowledged that different countries have imposed various restrictions on the use of weapons they provide to Ukraine. He also welcomed the U.S. decision to allow the use of American missiles to strike Russian territory near the border with Ukraine in Kharkiv Oblast.
When asked about the possibility of NATO membership for the government-controlled parts of Ukraine, Stoltenberg said, "We have seen different models, and I will be cautious in saying what solution will be applied to Ukraine."
Earlier reports indicated that Warsaw was considering intercepting Russian missiles heading towards Poland over western Ukraine.
